Alexandria Port: Rising as the Eastern Mediterranean’s Premier Transit Hub

Alexandria Port has recently emerged as a key player in the Eastern Mediterranean maritime landscape, showcasing significant growth in container volumes and vessel traffic throughout 2025. This remarkable performance was highlighted during the Misr Ports Company’s General Assembly meeting, underscoring the port’s enhanced status as a transit hub in the region.

Acknowledging Strong Leadership

The Ordinary and Extraordinary General Assembly was chaired by Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and the Minister of Industry and Transport. He was joined by a cadre of senior officials, including Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, and other prominent figures in maritime transport. Their presence at the meeting emphasized the importance of Alexandria Port within Egypt’s broader economic infrastructure.

Operational Performance Highlights

During the gathering, Misr Ports Company Chairman Abdel Qader Darwish delivered an impressive overview of the company’s operational performance for the year 2025. Alexandria Port had a stellar year, welcoming 464 vessels and handling nearly 800,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). This figures represented a staggering 41% increase compared to the previous year, solidifying the port’s prominent role in regional transhipment.

Dominance in Eastern Mediterranean Transit Traffic

As a direct result of this exceptional growth, Alexandria Port now commands approximately 40% of transit traffic in the Eastern Mediterranean. This statistic speaks volumes about its increasing significance in accommodating both regional and international container shipments. Several factors contribute to this rise, including enhanced operational efficiency, growing confidence among carriers, and Alexandria’s strategic location, which seamlessly connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Suez Canal.

Financial Statements and Professional Oversight

In addition to operational updates, the General Assembly also ratified the consolidated financial statements of the Egyptian Maritime Ports Company for the period spanning July 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024. These statements were diligently audited by both the Central Auditing Organization and an external auditor, assuring transparency and financial integrity in the company’s operations.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking to the horizon, Chairman Darwish shared exciting plans for future expansion and development projects. These initiatives aim to reinforce Alexandria Port’s status as a critical transit hub while focusing on increasing capacity and enhancing service levels to attract more mainline and feeder services. Such growth initiatives are projected to further bolster Egypt’s role in Eastern Mediterranean maritime trade and align with the country’s broader logistics and port development strategy.

Conclusion: A Hub in the Making

Overall, Alexandria Port is on a promising trajectory, supported by strategic leadership, operational prowess, and a clear vision for the future. With ongoing growth that underscores its vital position, Alexandria is poised to take center stage as a leader in global maritime logistics.
