NPA: Recognized as Outstanding Agency for Maritime Development in Nigeria

In a significant acknowledgment of its impact on trade facilitation and maritime growth within the country, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has received the Outstanding Agency of the Year Award 2025 from Champions Newspapers. The ceremony took place in Lagos and was a testament to the remarkable strides the agency has taken in advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Leadership and Strategic Initiatives

The Managing Director of the NPA, Abubakar Dantsoho, was represented by the General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Ikechukwu Onyemekara, at the award ceremony. Onyemekara emphasized that this recognition reflects the ongoing reforms and strategic initiatives led by Dantsoho. The leadership has been keen on implementing “smart initiatives” that aim to establish the NPA as a maritime logistics hub, focusing on sustainable port services across Africa.

Support from the Minister

The role of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has been pivotal in the NPA’s success. Onyemekara highlighted the ministry’s crucial support, which has been instrumental in driving various reforms and operational enhancements throughout Nigeria’s port system. This collaboration underscores the importance of government backing in furthering the objectives of agencies like the NPA.

Impressive Trade Performance

One of the standout achievements of the NPA has been the sustained improvements in port efficiency. Remarkably, these enhancements have played a significant role in Nigeria’s trade performance. According to the National Bureau of Statistics and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, the country has registered impressive year-on-year trade surpluses of ₦7.5 trillion and ₦6.7 trillion in the second and third quarters of 2025, respectively.

Policy Initiatives Supporting Economic Growth

The NPA has also made noteworthy strides in policy implementation. Recently, the agency has been proactive in adapting to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative on crude oil and petroleum product sales in naira. This policy is not only expected to ease pressure on foreign currency exchange but also aims to bolster energy security and job creation, two critical components for national economic stability.

Membership in International Associations

The NPA’s commitment to international cooperation is evident through its recent membership in the International Port Community Systems Association. This membership is anticipated to bolster the forthcoming National Single Window project, which is designed to enhance trade facilitation and streamline port operations across the nation.

Transshipment Opportunities

Another notable achievement is the growth in transshipment cargo at the Lekki Deep Sea Port. This advancement is vital as it positions Nigeria to serve as a regional maritime hub, particularly for landlocked neighboring countries. The ability to facilitate transshipment increases not only Nigeria’s trade potential but also strengthens its influence in the West African maritime landscape.

Regional Maritime Governance

The NPA has recently cemented its leadership role on a regional scale following its management’s election to head the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa. This accomplishment marks a pivotal moment, as it is the first time a Nigerian agency has held this position since 1972. Such leadership is significant for guiding maritime governance in the region and reflects the agency’s growing influence.

Future Projects

Looking ahead, the NPA is gearing up to undertake several major projects in 2025. Among these initiatives is the ambitious $1 billion reconstruction of the Tin Can Island Port, along with the rehabilitation of other port infrastructures. Additionally, plans are underway to develop new deep seaports and expand environmentally sustainable port operations—efforts that will enhance Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and operational efficiency.

The Role of Champions Newspapers

Champions Newspapers, in presenting the award, highlighted the NPA’s essential role as a platform for trade facilitation and its broader contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth through the maritime sector. This recognition not only celebrates past achievements but also signals the importance of sustained investment and reforms in enhancing the working mechanisms of the Nigerian ports.

Through these various initiatives and accomplishments, the Nigerian Ports Authority continues to pave the way for a more robust and efficient maritime industry, underscoring its vital role in Nigeria’s economic landscape.
